Justine Henin Announces Retirement
My heroine in tennis world, Justine announces her retirement at age 25. Her wins, 41 WTA titles, 7 grandslams of which 3 were from Roland Garros, France. I’m sadden because I won’t get to see her play in the arena of tennis anymore, I will miss her single backhand cross court winners, I will her miss her tenacity that sizzles up the screen each time she determines to win a breakpoint or to recover from one. I will miss Justine.
Here are some comments from the players about her retirement (from reuters UK):
MARIA SHARAPOVA (Russia), women’s world number two behind Henin: “She’s 25 years old and she’s achieved so much in her career. If I was 25 and I’d won so many grand slams I’d quit too,” Sharapova told a news conference.
ROGER FEDERER (Switzerland), men’s world number one: “It’s obviously a shock for the tennis world. It’s a particular surprise before Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which she’s never won.
“It’s quite surprising and unfortunate that she’s out of the game but she will have her reasons.
Whatever reasons she has, she has decided. Perhaps travelling and training have upset quality life with family and friends. Perhaps she has of enough attention and wants privacy from now on. She was reunited with her family and according to her coach, winning wasn’t enough anymore. I think to a certain extent, I can understand her sentiments and it’s best after sharing her life under the public eye for 10 years to retire into quietness and to enjoy the quality of life.
She will retire as the world number 1.
I can only speculate the reasons but I wish Justine the best in her new life
